Who’s Writing This and What’s it All About?

These are good questions. Great questions, in fact. My name is Brandon King. I got my PhD in Industrial-Organizational (I/O) psychology from Central Michigan University and have been doing consulting work for about 10 years. I have a wife and 3 kids (2 girls and 1 boy) who are the best burden I could ever ask for. I love Brigham Young University football and basketball. I play guitar. I need to work out to balance my love cooking and eating food. In other words, I am a pretty normal and at best an unknown person with some degree of expertise hoping to have a positive influence on others.

Throughout my own journey, I have had a desire to share some practical lessons I’ve learned with I/O graduate students and with HR professionals. Selfishly, this is also a way for me to process some of the things I experience in my work. I hope that at some point other I/O professionals and academics can contribute, making this a blog of practical tips and information from a variety of sources to make people’s work easier, but that might be a goal for the future. Let’s just see if I can garner any kind of a readership first. 😊 I’ll try to make it easy to find my blog posts when I get them up!

I am probably wordier than I need to be. And I am likely overly optimistic about my potential influence on others. But I read Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming” (I highly recommend it) around the same time I decided to start this blog. She talked about having a voice and inspiring others to pay attention to their story and things that they can share with others. I hope that by sharing my far-less-than-Michelle-Obama experiences, others can learn from them and we can all improve our respective workplaces. Because sometimes (maybe a lot of times) work sucks. I am on a mission to make work a little less so using the experience and expertise I have. Hope you enjoy!
